We have officially wrapped up the year 2014 and said goodbyes to all the mistakes made. It’s the new year, and marketers will want to venture out in new directions and experiment with their strategies. This past year saw a number of fabulous social media marketing campaigns, but it also had its fair share of the not-so-fabulous ones.

Not every marketing campaign will take off in the expected direction and hit the right notes with your audiences. There are countless ways in which you can promote your brand on Facebook and gain the attention of the desired audiences. However, while carrying out your marketing strategy try to avoid these common mistakes and you are sure to garner all the likes, comments and shares that you were expecting.

#1: Posting boring and irrelevant content

Be sure not to throw out a lot of graphs, statistics and numbers at your audiences because they won’t be able to relate to it. Create engaging posts instead, and try to involve your target audience in the conversation. Also, make sure your posts are relevant to your brand. Tell everyone about products you may be launching, ask your audience to suggest a name for your new product or post images/videos related to your brand.

#2: Not putting in the time and effort

There are no free lunches in the world. You will have to invest a considerable amount of time and effort to get the cash-registers ringing. Social media controls many of the purchase decisions that consumers make, and marketers need to grab the consumer’s attention on these very platforms. The role of the marketer has changed drastically, and they are now expected to be present on social media platforms where most of their audience is also present. Learn how you can use profile pictures, Facebook cover photos, and status updates to promote your brand. If you are new to Facebook, spend some time learning the ropes, and getting comfortable with the language used on the social media network to make sure you engage with all types of audiences.

#3: Not making use of tools offered by Facebook

Facebook has a variety of tools that can be utilized to keep track of your marketing campaigns, and to understand what type of content draws the most attention. Facebook Insights, Promoted Posts, Friends of Fans are all tools that you should not overlook. Keep an eye on these tools, and learn how to use them to get the most out of your marketing efforts on Facebook.

#4: Ignoring comments

The number of likes and comments you receive on Facebook is not just a number. The people leaving the comments on your posts are real and they will surely appreciate a reply. Take the time to answer questions from fans and to leave replies to their comments. This will add a more personal touch to your marketing campaigns helping you engage better with your existing and potential consumers.

#5: Breaking rules

This is probably the worst thing you could do. Go over the Facebook Terms and Conditions properly and think twice before posting something you are not sure of. Avoid tagging Facebook users without their permission. This is a violation of their privacy, and it might also be reported as abusive behavior by the user who is tagged. Also, if you are building a community, start a Facebook page instead of starting it off on your personal page.

Steer clear of violating any rules and regulations on Facebook, and ensure you avoid the other mistakes listed in this piece. A proper Facebook marketing strategy and time well-spent in engaging with your consumers can go a long way and reap a lot of rewards for your brand.
